Louisiana girl with rare condition to be honored in anime movie - New York Daily News

NY_Daily_News.JPGWhen filmmaker Robbie Bryan was writing his anime movie he envisioned a lead character who was unique and brave.

He envisioned a quirky teenage girl who had passion, and though she was the object of bullying, she had the strength to rise through it.

He envisioned a tough girl who would let nothing keep her from her dreams.

He envisioned Cassie England, 16, of Baton Rouge, La. He just didn't know she actually existed.

And though Cassie died a month ago from a rare and brutal skin disease, Bryan, who met her family a week after her death, is making her a key part of his upcoming film, "The Black Hat."

Cartoon Character Made for Local Girl Who Died From Rare Skin Disease - WDSU 6

WDSU_6.JPGNEW ORLEANS —It's a pilgrimage a Baton Rouge man is making this year minus his daughter, who recently passed away.

The trip was supposed to be for her 17th birthday, and now because of a Louisiana filmmaker, his daughter and her dreams will not be forgotten.

A character for Cassie: BR fan to be featured in upcoming film - The Advocate

The_Advocate.JPGThere’s a special character in “Black Hat,” an upcoming feature film being promoted at this weekend’s Comic Con.

Look for the young girl with reddish brown hair and cat ears in the movie from Good To Be Seen Films. She’s inspired by Cassie England, a Baton Rouge 16-year-old who died Jan. 9 from complications of Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare inherited connective tissue disease. England was a huge fan of cosplay, and when producers learned about her they decided to write an extra character for her into the film as a tribute.

Filmmaker Robbie Bryan has managed to collect (at the time of this writing) 235,427 Facebook likes for his upcoming film Black Hat, that’s still only in the development stage. He’s leveraged his fan base into an ambitious Seed & Spark campaign, interacting with them along the way and soliciting their input in the shaping of his script. Is this the new meaning of collaborative filmmaking?
