Black Hat

Cassie England died on Jan. 10 after a lifelong battle with a rare skin disease. Her goal was to be an artist and she loved the Japanese animation art form of anime. Her story will be included in an upcoming film by writer-director Robbie Bryan entitled "The Black Hat."

When filmmaker Robbie Bryan was writing his anime movie he envisioned a lead character who was unique and brave.

He envisioned a quirky teenage girl who had passion, and though she was the object of bullying, she had the strength to rise through it.

He envisioned a tough girl who would let nothing keep her from her dreams.

He envisioned Cassie England, 16, of Baton Rouge, La. He just didn't know she actually existed.

And though Cassie died a month ago from a rare and brutal skin disease, Bryan, who met her family a week after her death, is making her a key part of his upcoming film, "The Black Hat."

NEW ORLEANS —It's a pilgrimage a Baton Rouge man is making this year minus his daughter, who recently passed away.

The trip was supposed to be for her 17th birthday, and now because of a Louisiana filmmaker, his daughter and her dreams will not be forgotten.

There’s a special character in “Black Hat,” an upcoming feature film being promoted at this weekend’s Comic Con.

Look for the young girl with reddish brown hair and cat ears in the movie from Good To Be Seen Films. She’s inspired by Cassie England, a Baton Rouge 16-year-old who died Jan. 9 from complications of Epidermolysis Bullosa, a rare inherited connective tissue disease. England was a huge fan of cosplay, and when producers learned about her they decided to write an extra character for her into the film as a tribute.
